History of Bookscanned
A Simple Start
After scanning a short genealogy book for my siblings (so we could all access it) I realized that with a little bit of work I could make that scan readable by Google and other search engines. A few days later and I had OCR Show, a very rudimentary PHP script which lets you view an image and its coresponding text. You can still download OCR Show for use on your own site, but it won't likely be maintained.
Finding Myself
A few weeks later, I needed to confirm if an ancestor was male or female, so I searched online for the source listed in my genealogy book. When my very own webpage came up as the first Google result, I knew that this could be a useful tool for genealogy. By making my old books easily findable, someone else who has the same common ancestors will be able to learn more about their own heritage.
The Next Best Thing
Since I haven't been able to find all the information about my own ancestors online, I decided to put the rest of what I have online, and help others do the same. Maybe someday someone will upload a book with the information I'm missing. If not, I will still feel like I've helped someone.
About Me
My name is Michael Moore. I'm a tinkerer who happens to know how to program, likes working with tools and trying to fix things. You can check out my projects if you want.
I've been very happily married since November 2003 and have two fun and playful boys.
I speak Portuguese (Brazilian) pretty well, Spanish good enough to get by, enough Italian to get in trouble, can read French and German, and looking at Dutch or Sweedish makes my head hurt.
I run Ubuntu Linux on my main computer, but have access to Mac and Windows machines should I need them.
MISSING: Patrick McGinnis & Maria Moran
For what it's worth, the couple that I am most interested in finding more information about is Patrick (McGuinness) McGinnis and Maria Moran.
Patrick was born about 1818 in County Leitrim, Ireland, according to his Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) records. He died June 21, 1870 in County Roscommon, Ireland.
Maria Moran was born about 1830 in County Galway, Ireland, also according to Patrick's RIC records. Maria Moran is found on the SS Helvetia leaving Queenstown, Ireland, and arriving at the Port of New York, October 1, 1870 with her children Maria (Mary), Charlotte, Martin, Edward, Bernard, William and Walter.
Their other children were Patric McGinnis (who changed his name to Clarence Gray), James Edward McGinnis, John J. McGuinness (changed his name to John J. Moore)
Most of their children were Christened at the St. Peter & Durm Church in Athlone, County Roscommon, Ireland
If you have any information on Patrick or Maria's parents, I would be very happy if you'd send me an email at stuporglue@gmail.com
